Documentation : The Ultimate Shortwave Log (USWL.EXE) - John Corea -3/93
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
USWL.EXE requires 640K RAM - EMS MEMORY
USWL.EXE stores all data in EMS for super fast retrieval,
sorting ,etc. If you don't have EMS you cant use this program!
Include your time zone when running USWL in order for the
track mode to work. Valid time zones are :
EST - Eastern Standard Time
DST - Daylight Savings TIme
CST - Central Standard Time
MST - Moutain Standard Time
PST - Pacific Standard Time
ex: USWL EST - runs the program using EST
USWL.EXE is a program for Shortwave Listeners which keeps track
of all the various stations and programs heard via the airwaves on the
shortwave band. If you aren't a Shortwave listener (SWL) then maybe when
you see what is available on the airwaves you'll want to get a radio and
start tuning the bands. USWL comes with over 500 up-to-date loggings.
These are all english langage broadcasts which I have personally listened
to. The data file name is USWL.LOG. You may, of course, delete this file
if you want, but I wouldn't. With USWL you can track up to 5000 entries
(more than you'll ever need). USWL will make your SWLing a real pleasure
as you can enter all the good stations and programs you find and then
sort them by day, time, or station/program and have the ability to see
what's on at any given time/day at a glance !
OVERVIEW :
F1 = Enter
Press the F1 key to add a new entry.
F2 = Search
Press the F2 key to search previous entries by
selected criteria (DAY-TIME-LOCATION-STATION)
F3 = List
Press the F3 key to list ALL entries (500 at a time).
F4 = Sort Press the F4 key to sort ALL entries by selected
sort criteria (DAY-TIME-LOCATION-STATION).
F5 = Track Mode
Press the F5 key to enter the auto-tracking mode.
F6 = Write Ascii
Press F6 to write an ASCII file of all the entries.
The name of the file will be USWL.TXT.
F7 = Delete
Press F7 to delete particular entries
F8 = Quit
Press F8 to quit the program
OPERATION :
F1 = Enter
When you select enter the first thing that will happen
is a window will popup to select days of operation. Some
stations operate only on certain days. Select the day of
operation by using the cursor up/down keys to highlight
the desired day(s) and pressing return. (You can also
use the mouse). You may also select DAILY which means the
station can be heard every day. WEEKENDS means the station
(or program) can only be heard on weekends. WEEKDAYS means
the station or program can only be heard during the week.
After selecting the day(s) of operation for the particular
station/program you are entering you will be positioned
in the TIME area. Enter the time in UTC for the station
/program you are entering. Enter the time in hhmm format,
ex: 1130 (11 hours 30 minutes). After entering the time
you are positioned in the Location - Station area. Enter
the Location or station or program or whatever suits your
particular fancy ! Take a look at the data I have included
for a useful format for entry. You may, of course, enter
data any way you desire. Finally , you enter the frequency(s)
for which this station/program can be heard.Enterthe freq-
uency(s) in KHz ex: 11780 = 11,780 KHz.. You may
cycle through all the field of entry by pressing return.
When all the data is correct press F1 to validate (save)
the data. After pressing F1 you will once again have the
days menu presented. If you want to enter more data, do
so, otherwise press ESC to abort any further entries. Note
that during entry the previous entry data is not erased.
This is done purposely because it allows you to enter multiple
days/times for the same station/program without having to
retype all the data . Just change the one field you desire
and press F1 to save !!
F2 = Search
Select this option to view a list of entries matching a
certain criteria. First you will be presented with a menu
from which you select the criteria you want to search with.
Select DAY to search for all entries for a given day. Select
TIME to search all entries that match a given time. Select
Location-Program to search all entries matching a given
location-program (station or whatever). If you select TIME
or Location-Progam you then will enter the string you want
to match. If you enter 01 as the time to search for all
entries where the time begins with 01 will be listed (0100,
0130, etc). Similarly, when you enter the search spec for
Location-Program you will be presented a list of all entries
matching that spec. Ex: If you enter C as the search spec,
all locations/programs/stations which begin with C will be
listed. Once presented with the list you may scroll through
the list using the cursor up/down or page up/down keys. If
you desire to edit any of the items on the list, TAG it by
pressing the spacebar and then press ENTER. Make any changes
necessary and press F1 to validate or press ESC if you dont
want to keep the changes (keeps the original). You may tag
multiple entries for editing and they will be presented seq-
uentially for editing. This is a useful feature for editing
frequency information for a given station . Press ESC to
exit the search mode. If the search criteria returns more than
500 matching items you will only be presented with 500 of
them. With the official release of V1.0 (this version)
I have included Frequency search. I found while testing this
program that the ability to search for frequency was needed
and so it is. While the frequency search is a bit slower
than the other search criteria it is still fast enough .
F3 = List
The list feature brings up a list of ALL entries in the
current sorted order. Use the cursor up/down page up/down
keys to scroll through the list. To move back 500 records
press the cursor left key. To move ahead 500 records press
the cursor right key. To edit an item on the list simply
press return on the highlighted item. Press ESC to exit
the list mode.
F4 = Sort
Select SORT to sort all the entries by the selected criteria.
You will be presented with a menu of criteria. DAY - Select
day to sort the list by days. TIME - Select time to sort the
list by time. When you select time sort the file will be
re-written in time sorted order. Select Location-Program to
sort the list by location-program. Using the sort and then
the list feature is a terrific way to see what's on and when.
It's also a handy way to locate previous entries for editing
frequency data, etc..
F5 = Track Mode
When you enter the track mode the screen goes to a 80 col, 50
row screen and displays whats on at the current time ! A great
way to sit back and tune the bands is to go to track mode and
see what's on ! If you dont have an EGA or better monitor then
track mode will remain in the 25 line screen.Press ESC to exit
the track mode.
F6 = Write Ascii
Press F6 to write an ASCII file of the entire log. The ASCII
file will be named USWL.TXT and can be viewed with any ASCII
viewer (LIST, etc) or can be printed or whatever ! A nice
feature..
F7 = DELETE
Use this function to delete invalid entries. Do everything you
did for search only this time when you tag an item it is deleted.
Press ESC to abort DELETE MODE.
F8 = QUIT
That's all there is to it. There are help messages for each and every
operation. Read the help messages and you can't go wrong.
If you have any constructive criticism please let me know. Send your
comments to me along with the registration fee and I will gladly
consider incorporating them in a future release.
